Why us Blueberry Jam from Vermont?

Blueberries thrive in Vermont’s cool climate and acidic soil, making them a popular crop in the state. Vermont’s blueberry farms boast rows of bushes bursting with plump, juicy berries ready for picking during the summer months. Wild Vermont blueberries are known for their sweet and tangy flavor. Visitors can find local blueberry products such as jams and syrups at farmer’s markets and roadside stands throughout the state. On our last trip to Vermont, we picked up some handmade, wild blueberry jam from Sidehill Farm that was especially good.
Jam is a great way for growers to be able to sell all of their crop without waste when they have too much fruit coming off all at once. It also allows them to add value by spending time making the jam and this gives them a second, storable, product. Rather than making jam ourselves, we love shopping for it wherever we travel. Vermont blueberries are a quintessential summer treat that captures the essence of the state’s agricultural bounty.
As an agricultural advisor in California’s important blueberry producing area, I worked with growers to help them optimize their farming practices and advised on pest and disease management strategies to ensure healthy and robust crops. Additionally, I facilitated workshops and training sessions to educate farmers on the organic regulations. Through my work, I helped contribute to the success and sustainability of the blueberry industry in California. So, I particularly relate to berry growers.
Additionally, blueberries are considered a superfood because of their numerous health benefits. They are packed with antioxidants, which help protect the body against oxidative stress and inflammation. Blueberries are also high in fiber, vitamins C and K, and manganese, making them a nutritious addition to any diet. Studies have shown that consuming blueberries regularly can improve brain function, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Blueberries are a delicious and versatile fruit that can contribute to overall health and well-being.

What makes this the Best Recipe for Easy Blueberry Sugar Cookies?
These cookies are made from our master cookie making method, which is easy, accurate, and foolproof. By changing the flavor of the jam, you can make a number of different cookies with one batch of cookie dough. We created a recipe that is not just easy, but also the best tasting sugar cookies ever. Making the best cookies starts with using the best ingredients. We have listed the brands for some of the ingredients because ingredients are everything. We have found that these brands give superior results. Additionally, for this recipe we used a blueberry jam that we picked up in Vermont, but really good blueberry jam can be found lots of places.
As a food photographer, I pay close attention to texture. These cookies were styled to show their true crumb — crisp edges, soft centers, no tricks.
Pairing Ideas & Variations
- Swap the filling — Try blackberry or cherry.
- Add blueberry powder to the dough — A little bit intensifies the flavor.
- Use for ice cream sandwiches — Pair with a vanilla or blueberry swirl confiture ice cream made with our Master Ice Cream Recipe to make ice cream sandwiches.
Gluten-Free Version of These Cookies
Yes — this recipe works beautifully as a gluten-free cookie.
I’ve tested a gluten-free version of this recipe using King Arthur Gluten-Free Measure for Measure Flour, and the method stays almost exactly the same. The finished cookies have the same appearance, flavor, and structure as the original, with only a slightly more tender crumb.
What Changes in the Gluten-Free Version
- Flour: Replace the all-purpose flour with King Arthur Gluten-Free Measure for Measure Flour
- Preserves – Use certified gluten-free preserves. Preserves are usually naturally gluten-free but may be processed where other products contain gluten.
- Mixing: No changes needed — mix exactly as written
- Resting time: No changes needed – refrigerate the dough as directed
- Baking: Bake as directed; gluten-free cookies may benefit from an extra 1–2 minutes for structure
Texture & Flavor Notes
The gluten-free cookies bake up:
- Crisp at the edges
- Tender through the center
- Clean-tasting, without any “gritty” texture
Most tasters would never guess these cookies are gluten-free.
Sustainability and Supporting Local Blueberry Growers
When blueberries ripen, bushes often produce far more than can be used fresh. Making blueberry jam not only preserves the fruit but helps growers stabilize their income by offering a value-added product at a time when fruit supply surges.
By choosing jam made from sustainably grown fruit, you are supporting small growers, reducing food waste, and helping keep diverse citrus varieties in cultivation.
This makes every cookie a small but meaningful act of sustainability.
