The Common Buckeye Butterfly, Junonia coenia, that despite the name, we have rarely seen.

They are easy to identify because of the spots on their wings that look like eyes. The California Native Plant Society has extensive information on their website about host plants for the Common Buckeye Butterfly, and the Butterflies and Moths of North America website has maps and photos for identification. We definitely have more butterflies in the yard this year since we have been planting the garden to attract butterflies. We love the variety of butterflies in the yard this year.
