Waldorf salad, originally created at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, has been a classic in homes for generations. We updated the classic by giving it a new look. Walnuts, raisins, apples, and celery with a strawberry mayonnaise dressing. The dressing is made with a little walnut oil, crème fraîche and pepper flakes as well. We wait all year for the tomato season and the heirloom tomatoes that taste like tomatoes should. Photos by Tony Fitzgerald Photography PHOTOS ARE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE FOR IMMEDIATE DOWNLOAD FOR COMMERCIAL USE.
One of the special things about living in the Santa Cruz area is the local seafood. Just past the town of Davenport, there is an abalone farm, American Abalone, that is open to the public on Saturday. It doesn’t get any fresher than picking out your own live abalone.
I just discovered Greenvelope, a company that lets you create wedding invitations that are entirely online. The electronic invitations lets you save a tree, and then environment (and some money), but best of all – they are really cute!! Gorgeous invitations! Loving this idea!
If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you were at a live Beatles Concert, show up at a concert of The Sun Kings and just close your eyes. Many people did just that at this year’s Capitola Art and Wine Festival Saturday night.
Tony and I had the pleasure of photographing at Buttercup Cakes and Farmhouse frosting yesterday. Easily the cutest cupcake shop I’ve ever been in, and the cupcakes taste like my grandmother used to make – homemade, buttery – but so much prettier! Carren, one of the owners told us how they make the buttery frosting and it stays looking beautiful on wedding cakes even for outdoor weddings, so a couple doesn’t have to choose between a gorgeous cake and one that taste incredible.
We just discovered this bakery when they created the wedding cake for a wedding we photographed recently. It was so perfect for the style of the wedding. Located in the Santa Cruz area and aptly named Pure Bliss Baking Company.
I know it sounds unbelievable, but we often have wine leftover. We also have a difficult time finding a decent wine vinegar, so I had the idea of making it out of the leftover wine. After all, how hard can it be? Actually, unlike other projects, this one turned out to be really easy! […]
This was definately “farm to table”, since we actually went to the farm. Artichokes are grown around Santa Cruz, and these were from the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. The aioli was made with rosemary and garlic confit. Tip: Garlic confit is a great thing to have on hand. We make it by slowly cooking garlic in oil on the stovetop at the lowest temperature possible, for about an hour, and then keeping it in the refrigerator for safe keeping. Marie’s Garden is a wedding venue in Santa Cruz county that many couples may not even know about. This is the home on the apple farm where Marie Gandrup raised her children, and the marks of a happy childhood are everywhere, from the children’s toys to the playhouse. Much of it has been lovingly preserved by the childern and is now the backdrop to the weddings that occur here where couples are starting their own lives and families together. If you are looking for a real old fashioned apple farm for the site of your wedding, this is it.
